Hello and welcome to the September edition of Massive eNews!
This month's Massive Enews will focus on employment in the Hi-tech sector. Are you getting the most out of your recruitment efforts? Are you looking in the right places? Are you choosing the right people?
According to Industry Canada, both revenues and employment in the tech sector are on the rise. From 1996 to 1997, there was a 5.4% increase in revenues, which translated to the creation of 42,300 new jobs-a 9.8% rise in the same time period.
That was almost 10 years ago.
The technology industry today is responsible for 10% of all new jobs in Canada, and employs over half a million Canadians. Although this is undoubtedly positive, there are some challenges to such rapid and sustained growth. More jobs on the market leads to more choice for job seekers, and businesses are forced to compete with each other for qualified staff.
In this issue, Leo Da Silva, founder of HITECHBC.ca, shares his insight on new ways to find job candidates, and Jason Jung, membership coordinator of ASTTBC, explains some ways employers can be sure they are recruiting the right people.
Regardless whether you are a job seeker or recruiter, there is a lot to learn from this edition of Massive e-news!
Read on and happy hunting!
Sincerely,
Lindsay Smith, Executive Producer

ARTICLE: Technology Professionals… Building a Competitive Edge for BC Tech By Jason Jung, ASTTBC
It's everywhere… an ever-expanding global market, fuelled by innovation in technology, which continues to transcend traditional or geographic boundaries at an accelerating rate. Ensuring one's survival in the new millennium means harnessing critical human capital - people with knowledge and expertise - locally, nearshore and offshore.
The Applied Science Technologists & Technicians of British Columbia (ASTTBC) is an important resource when it comes to 'benchmarking' human capital - technology professionals who are job-ready with education and experience - for BC's technology sector. A self-governing, professional association formed in 1958 to register technologists and technicians in the engineering and architectural fields, ASTTBC, embraced new disciplines as technology expanded into other sectors now encompassing sixteen disciplines and nine special certifications within applied science technology.

ARTICLE: A Hi-Tech Q & A with Leo Da Silva, Management & Recruitment Specialist of Logitech Consultants Inc. & founder of HITECHBC.ca
[Question] What is your view on the current state of the technology job market in BC? Is Hi-Tech Employment in a growth mode?
[Answer] The Hi-Tech market in BC is in a growth state and there is a shortage of skilled talent to fill positions. Previously, where a company may have posted a position and received up to 100 applications - in today's market - they may receive approximately 10 applications.
[Q] What advantages can Hi-Tech Professionals give themselves when looking for Hi-Tech opportunities in British Columbia? Besides the specific technology skills required to fill specific high-tech jobs, what do Hi-Tech companies look for in a candidate?
[A] Progressive companies looking for Hi-Tech candidates recognize technology as a strategic advantage. They look for candidates that can quickly add value to their business, those who understand that technology must align with their strategic directions and are willing to think 'out of the traditional box' in order to provide them with this strategic advantage.
