ABOUT BILL HUTCHISON
Bill Hutchison is a business and social entrepreneur who was Global Chairman, Telecommunications Industry for Ernst & Young and a senior executive with Honeywell and Arthur Andersen. He has been the founding chairman or founding director of ten not for profit social or industry consortia and in business he has also been the turnaround CEO of four companies, one public and three private, and he has founded three of his own companies. He has lived and worked in Europe, Asia and North America.
Today, Bill directs his own consulting practice, and he is the Executive Director, Intelligent Communities for Waterfront Toronto where he leads the creation of one of the world’s most advanced “Intelligent Communities” as part of the $17 billion revitalization of Toronto’s central waterfront. He is Chairman of Lavell Systems Inc, a US satellite communications firm and he is a member of the board of directors of Balaton Group Inc, an investment firm focused on special business situations. He also serves as the Founding Chair of KINSA: The Kids’ Internet Safety Alliance and as Chair of the KINSA Foundation.
Hailed in 2005 by a panel of business and technology editors as “One of Canada’s Top 30 Movers and Shakers over the Past 30 years”, Mr. Hutchison was the Founding Vice-Chairman of the National Advisory Board for Science and Technology, chaired by the Prime Minister of Canada, and he was the Founding Chairman of CANARIE Inc., which for the past fifteen years has led the development of Canada’s national advanced ultra broadband Internet research and education infrastructure.
He advised the Hong Kong government on the creation of Hong Kong’s celebrated CyberPort and he established the first American owned technology centre in Malaysia’s Multi Media Super Corridor, one of the world’s largest infrastructure developments in the late ‘90s. His other public service roles have included Founding Vice Chair of SMART Toronto, founding investor and director of Precarn, Canada’s national robotics and intelligent systems centre of excellence, director of the Ontario Laser and Lightwave Research Institute, director of le Centre de Recherche Informatique de Montreal, Founding Chair of the Canadian information Productivity Awards, founding director and Chairman of the Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance and former Governor of the Information Technology Association of Canada.
In recognition of his contributions, Mr Hutchison received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Intelligent Community Forum in New York. He is a “Fellow” of the Canadian Information Processing Society and previously he received their Gary Hadford Professional Achievement Award “For Professionalism and Integrity”. He was elected to the Hall of Fame of the Canadian Information Productivity Awards and he has received the Research in Motion Private Sector Leadership Award from the Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance.
